Chigwell School appoints Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead

Ms Ochana joined Chigwell School as a teacher of science in 2013, having previously worked at Lister Community School in Newham.

She is the House Mistress of Swallows, having served as Assistant House Mistress of Swallows two years prior. She really likes working alongside the students, supporting them through the highs of winning House Music, the various school shields and academic success, to supporting them through difficult times when they need the guidance of a friendly teacher who is always in their corner. Ms Ochana’s approach to leading Swallows’ House is an attachment focussed relationship led approach. Her philosophy is one of building strong connections with students, parents and staff as it is her belief that young people feel safe and thrive if they have a sense of belonging to a community built on kindness.

Ms Ochana began her professional career as a chemical engineer after gaining her degree at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Engineering. She then spent 14 years working for The Royal Bank of Scotland in corporate banking, distributing syndicated loans to international banks before changing careers to train as a teacher in 2010.

She has just completed a National Professional Qualification in Leading Behaviour and Culture at the University College London, Institute of 看片狂人. In September 2024, she was appointed as Lead for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for the School and promoted to the Senior Management Team. She is currently working alongside Angela Browne from Being Luminary in rolling out DEI training to staff across the school. She is also building links with organisations such as ACEN (‘The African Caribbean Educators Network’), Trauma Informed Schools, The Difference, and as well as networking with DEI Leads from other schools. Since taking on the role, Ms Ochana has been pleased to see the growing awareness of the Equality Act 2010 and the protected characteristics covered by the act across the school. She is working closely with staff and students to hear their voice on how Chigwell School can become more inclusive, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the diverse community that makes up the school.
