Roedean School

It is a place, one pupil tells us, where ‘everyone finds their tribe’. Girls enjoy a top-drawer education and outstanding co-curricular, all the while making friends for life, learning strong moral values and discovering and finding confidence in who they are. Head Niamh Green, who has 25 years’ experience of working in different schools, says, ‘Roedean is amazing. I feel this school is where the girls are their most ambit...

    Bursaries
Roedean is committed to widening access by offering financial support to families for whom a Roedean education would otherwise be unaffordable. Bursaries may be applied for either alongside a scholarship application or independently. All applications undergo a thorough means-testing process conducted by an external assessor to ensure fairness and transparency. Awards are made with consideration of both financial need and the student’s performance in the school’s entrance assessments. Bursaries are reviewed annually and are subject to reassessment, as well as the student’s continued positive contribution to school life.

Roedean’s bursary provision is not set as a fixed annual sum; instead, it is calculated as a percentage of the school’s income. This enables a flexible and responsive approach to financial support. The bursary pot is designed to cover a range of needs, including awards for existing pupils, new entrants, and hardship funding. Hardship funding is typically allocated to families who experience a significant and unforeseen change in circumstances during their child’s time at the school.

Roedean’s bursary programme operates independently of its scholarship provision. Bursaries are awarded solely on the basis of financial need through a comprehensive means-testing process. However, all applicants must meet the school’s academic and admissions criteria in order to be considered for a place, in order to be considered for bursary funding.

The school offers a range of bursary opportunities, primarily for students entering in Years 7, 9, and 12. In addition to general means-tested bursaries, they provide several named awards, including:
Brighthelm Award – available to students entering Year 7 or Year 12 who attend a state school and live within a 20-mile radius of Roedean. These awards are means-tested and aimed at academically able students, typically those performing within the top 5% of their current school cohort.
Forces Funding – designed to support families eligible for the Continuity of ¿´Æ¬¿ñÈË Allowance (CEA), covering the difference between the full boarding fee and 10% plus CEA.
Cleary Funding – provides a bursary of 20% of fees for eligible families.
Old Roedeanian Funding – offers a 10% fee reduction for daughters of former Roedean pupils.

Roedean does not operate with a fixed household income threshold for bursary eligibility. Instead, all applications are assessed holistically through a detailed means-testing process. This takes into account not only income, but also assets, expenditure, financial liabilities (both short- and long-term), and any business interests or directorships. Families are also invited to provide a full explanation of their financial circumstances to support their application.
