The younger sibling of Abingdon School, which is one of the oldest in the UK with a history dating back to the 13th century, this high-achieving academic prep occupies its own site five miles away where the boys – and increasing numbers of girls – throw themselves into everything on offer in and out of the classroom. ‘Be kind, get involved, work hard’ is the school motto, and as current head Craig Williams prepares to hand over the baton to Nicky Black in January 2026, times are exciting for Abingdon Prep as it moves towards being fully co-ed by 2028.     Bursaries
    Abingdon offers a fairly small but well-implemented bursary scheme that also covers new students entering Years 7 and 8. Overseen by the school’s bursary panel, the awards are means-tested and cover the teaching costs of an education at Abingdon, lunch and most books and materials.

    Bursaries are not academically selective – although pupils must meet the baseline academic standards for acceptance – but are only available to UK families.
