WGS students honoured to represent GB & England
Two WGS students have had the honour of representing Great Britain and England in their chosen sports this summer.
Sixteen-year-old Cassie Taylor recently competed at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Birmingham and won a bronze and gold medal in the Kumite and Kata classes of Karate.
Meanwhile fellow student and triathlete Leah Gopal competed in her first international competition and represented GB in the European Championships held in Munich, completing a 750m swim, 21km cycle and 5km run. Leah has also recently returned from representing GB in the Europe Triathlon Cross Duathlon Championships held in Bilbao, Spain, which entailed a 5km run and 21 km cycle, followed by a further 2.5km run.
Both Cassie and Leah are studying A Levels at WGS Sixth Form and were awarded the prestigious Sports Colours ties by Head, Mr Frazer, in recognition of their sporting successes in a recent assembly.
Cassie joined us in September as our Old Wulfrunian (OW) Sports Scholar and has been competing in karate since she was just 8 years old, entering her first international competition just one year later. Cassie’s dedication to her sport makes her an exemplary scholar; she trains locally three to four times a week, and once a fortnight in London, with additional national and regional training monthly. Alongside this, Cassie also finds time to teach her own class once a week.
In tandem with their Sixth Form studies both girls are busy training for future competitions. We are extremely proud of Leah and Cassie and wish them every success for the future.
