Considering a future career in TV

WGS Head of Careers, Asha Kailey, took 32 Year 8 students to Sky Studios Academy in London to learn about careers in TV and Media.

At Wolverhampton Grammar School, students are exposed to as many different career paths as possible. Miss Kailey, Head of Careers, recently organised an insightful trip to Sky Studios in London, where students were able to learn about a future career in TV and Media.

Thirty-two students in Year 8 had the fantastic opportunity to experience a day in the life of an employee at Sky. They enjoyed a tour of the studio, seeing the Sky media workforce in action, and even witnessed the live filming of Sky Sports.

The students spent most of their afternoon at the Sky Academy, where they worked in teams and used the latest technology to produce their own short film. They learnt about the different media roles, such as editor and camera editor, chose from a range of green screen backgrounds, experienced operating the cameras and even chose outfits from the wardrobe.

It was a wonderful day, with all students leaving the studio excited about the prospect of a future career in TV and Media.

“I truly felt that the Sky Studio trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity. After our visit I have been inspired to work at the Sky studio or have a job in television or media as I enjoyed it so much. Getting to learn about what the workspace and behind the scenes of Sky Sports and Sky news etc… it was truly magical. The staff were also really nice!”
Kendall

“Personally, I found sky studios very interesting and informative but most of all quite insightful as it showed me the roles and effort that goes into making a movie. I think that it was especially useful as it let me know that a career in media is not just acting but also editing and many other important roles. Even if you don’t want to be a news presenter or a reporter then maybe editing or filming from behind the camera is for you.”
Faris

As the student voice shows, this is one of the many successful initiatives that form part of the Careers 看片狂人 programme at Wolverhampton Grammar School. Thank you to the WGS Careers team for their work in providing this amazing opportunity and to Sky Studios for being excellent hosts.
