Holme Grange Hosts Celebrated Authors for Two-Day Literary Festival

Holme Grange School welcomed eight acclaimed authors and illustrators for a two-day Literary Festival that inspired pupils from Nursery through to Year 11.

The event featured storytelling, illustration, creative writing and thought-provoking discussion, highlighting the value of literature across all age groups.

Illustrator Korky Paul, best known for Winnie the Witch, led imaginative sessions with Little Grangers, Reception and Years 1–2, helping pupils create vibrant collaborative artwork. Fellow illustrator Martin Brown, of Horrible Histories fame, entertained Years 3–6 with engaging drawing workshops, showing that creativity belongs to everyone.

Author Maz Evans delivered high-energy storytelling to Years 3–4 and visiting pupils from St Sebastian’s School, combining history, humour and her popular Vi Spy series. Meanwhile, Ali Sparkes ran interactive writing workshops for Eaton Grange students, using her own journey to publication to emphasise the value of perseverance and imagination.

Award-winning author Patrice Lawrence shared her book Is That Your Mama? with younger pupils, while also encouraging older students to draw on personal experiences when writing. Her sessions explored themes of identity and representation in literature.

Sufiya Ahmed engaged pupils with stories from her Rosie Raja historical series and introduced the joy of Eid celebrations through her book The Best Eid Ever. Her sessions highlighted the power of cultural storytelling to connect pupils with both history and contemporary life.

Former professional footballer turned author Seth Burkett shared stories from Titans of the Teardrop Island, speaking about resilience, ambition and the unifying power of sport.

The festival concluded with author Holly Bourne, who explored the connection between storytelling and mental health. Speaking to senior students, she encouraged them to consider how the narratives we tell ourselves shape our wellbeing and sense of identity.

Festival Organiser, Mrs Suzie Tuomey, was instrumental in bringing the event to life. Her passion and commitment ensured the festival was a meaningful experience for pupils of all ages.

'It was both exciting and surreal to welcome such talented and versatile writers and illustrators for 24 events over two days. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, laughter and inspiration. Events like this reflect the Holme Grange way – a blend of passion, professionalism and creativity from our staff, making this a truly special place where the love of reading is not only alive, but thriving.'

Holme Grange School continues to place a strong emphasis on reading, creativity and cultural literacy as part of its commitment to a broad and balanced education.
