EHS to Kick Off 150th Birthday with World Record Attempt
On Wednesday 9 July, Edgbaston High School will be launching its 150th birthday celebrations in unforgettable style - by attempting to set a world record.
In a vibrant celebration of community and creativity, over 600 staff and pupils will gather on the school field to take part in a Sofunk-athon, led by Zumba Instructor Sharon Brown, in a bid to set the record for the most people dancing Zumba to funk and soul music. The event promises to be a joyful “colour fest,” with girls proudly dressed in their House colours.
The record attempt is just the beginning of a day filled with fun. Pupils will enjoy an afternoon of “fun on the field,” featuring classic summer games including rounders and a BBQ. The school will also be creating a human ‘150’, captured by drone, becoming a lasting image to mark this milestone year.
When we return to school in the autumn term, the celebrations continue with EDGfest, a school-wide creative competition designed to showcase the talents of all our pupils. Whether through drama, science projects, poetry or performance, EDGfest will celebrate the imagination, passion and values that define Edgbaston High School. We also have planned a Birthday Bash, special Birthday Assembly, and other events hosted by our alumnae community, The Laurels Association.
This year, EHS proudly celebrates 150 years since our founding in 1876. Established to provide a high-quality education for girls at a time when such opportunities were rare, the school was led by its first headmistress, Alice Cooper – a pioneering figure in girls’ education. From its earliest days, EHS has championed academic excellence and encouraged girls to pursue their interests in all subjects, including the sciences, long before STEM became a recognised acronym.
