RGS Surrey Hills - Make A Difference Week

During our recent Make a Difference Week, students from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 stepped away from their normal timetables to support a wide range of local community organisations and schools.

Over the course of the week, students volunteered at various locations including:

  • Micklefield School, Reigate
  • Banstead Preparatory School
  • Dorking and Mole Valley Athletics Club
  • Banstead Community Junior School
  • High Ashurst
  • St Michael and All Angels Church
  • Sutton Ecology Centre
  • Warren Mead Infant and Junior School Partnership
  • Powell Corderoy School
  • Kingswood Shetlands & Friends - Community Interest Not for Profit
  • Tracks through Pastures CIO with Kingswood Shetlands & Friends AAT CIC
  • Juniper Hall
  • St Michael's Community Nursery
  • St Martin's Primary School
From gardening and conservation work to classroom tidy-ups and athletics coaching, our students approached every task with enthusiasm, teamwork and a real willingness to help.

We were proud to receive such positive feedback from the organisations involved. Reverend Sandra Faccini at St Michael and All Angels Church said:

"We were very pleased to have the assistance of RGS Surrey Hills students this morning. They were very polite and helpful. They worked hard at raking the grass up after our recent cut. We only cut twice a year to help wildlife but raking up the cut long grass is important as it both tidies the graves and helps promote biodiversity. Do please thank the students and the staff member, Ms Rose."

Mary from Sutton Ecology Centre added:

"I just wanted to say a huge thank you again to all the team for the amazing job they did today. They all got stuck in and worked hard, and this showed in the results. I feel that the classroom is a much more welcoming building for schools to arrive at now."

Alongside their volunteering, many of our students also took the lead in creating their own fundraising activities. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of our school community, we have raised money for a number of charities close to our students' hearts. We look forward to sharing the final total soon.Make a Difference Week has shown how small acts of kindness, teamwork and initiative can make a real impact in our local community. We are proud of what our students achieved and look forward to making this a regular part of school life.
