St Swithun’s pupils star in national media as they help launch the Big Butterfly

Pupils from St Swithun’s Prep and Senior Schools took centre stage in the national spotlight on Friday as they helped launch the UK’s Big Butterfly Count 2025 — the world’s largest citizen science survey dedicated to butterflies.

They appeared live on BBC Breakfast and ITV’s Good Morning Britain, where they spoke about the importance of tracking butterfly populations and protecting natural habitats. Later in the day, their efforts were highlighted during the BBC News at One, reaching millions of viewers across the country.

The launch took place in the idyllic setting of Magdalen Hill Down, a former chalk quarry near Winchester now flourishing as a nature reserve, managed by Butterfly Conservation. Pupils from both schools took part in the count, armed with ID guides and butterfly nets, enthusiastically spotting species including the marbled white, meadow brown, and gatekeeper. Their involvement showcased the school’s strong commitment to environmental education.

Speaking to the BBC, prep student Rosie said, 'I think it’s so important so that people can connect to nature, and they don’t just spend all their time indoors.'

Imogen added, 'I want to take part because I think every person should do a bit to help the world.'

St Swithun’s Prep head Liz Norris said, 'We are incredibly proud of our pupils for the maturity and passion they showed in supporting such an important cause. Their national appearances are testament not only to their enthusiasm for learning, but also to their growing awareness of global environmental issues.'

The Big Butterfly Count, which runs until early August, encourages the public to spend 15 minutes spotting butterflies and moths in any green space. The data helps scientists understand how species are faring across the UK. The count has been set up by the Butterfly Conservation charity. As climate change and habitat loss continue to threaten butterfly populations, the contributions of young people — like those from St Swithun’s — have never been more valuable.

At St Swithun’s Prep, students can make a positive impact on the environment and grow a deep appreciation for the natural world through involvement in a wide range of opportunities such as our eco-committee, gardening club and outdoor explorer sessions.
