Mark Brearey has been at the helm of Kingswood Prep School for 12 years, and his warm and relaxed manner makes him a popular figure. His number one passion, he tells us, is kindness, and he’s all about embracing difference and quirkiness. Get to know Mr Brearey by reading on...

How long have you been at the school?

I’ve been at Kingswood Prep since September 2011. It feels like both forever and no time at all.

30 second elevator pitch for your school – sell it!

It’s a really close-knit community where children can truly be themselves. They’re surrounded by a team of staff who are incredibly dedicated and passionate about fostering a culture of kindness, while ensuring that every child has the space to grow and thrive.

Who would you like to star as you in a movie of your life?

It would be lovely to say Tom Hardy, but realistically, it’d probably be more like Greg Davies or Lee Mack!

Describe your own childhood school days.

My education was in a completely different era, and it’s hard to compare it to the rich, dynamic learning experiences our children are getting today. I would’ve loved to attend a place like Kingswood.

What was the common theme of your school reports?

My school reports were pretty consistent – “Needs to concentrate,” “…when he applies himself,” “Heard before he is seen,” and “Total enthusiasm, but needs direction” – you get the picture!

Favourite/worst teachers at your childhood school and why?

Oddly, I always loved the teachers before I loved the subject. Mrs Watson in primary school was so kind, calm, and dedicated to each child – she even showed interest in what you were up to outside of school. Mr Underwood at senior school brought English to life with his incredible storytelling, and he was always so patient and supportive. Plus, he loved sport, which made his after-school sports sessions even more enjoyable and motivating.

What did you study at university?

I studied history and sports studies, a combo that made perfect sense for me and has shaped much of my career path. I also completed a PGCE and more recently Level 7 Executive Mentoring & Coaching, so I’ve been learning ever since.

Tell us your favourite books – in childhood, uni, and now.

Boys Don’t Cry by Malorie Blackman stands out as one of my absolute favourites. I loved reading it with my Year 8 English group – it sparked amazing conversations and was a book that resonated with both the pupils and me.

If you weren’t a head, what would you be?

If I weren’t a head, I’d probably still be a teacher. I love being in the classroom, connecting with pupils, and seeing them grow.

What’s in the top drawer of your desk?

The top drawer is where the fun stuff lives! There are Brearey’s Big cards, chocolate (obviously), Uno cards for a quick break, a set of kids’ quiz questions, and Brearey Bonus Points that can be exchanged for prizes. It’s a treasure chest of goodies!

What’s the best school trip (childhood or current) you’ve ever been on?

One of the best trips I’ve been on was when we took 30 children from Kenya to England for a sports tour – it was the first time for most of them, and just three had been to the UK before. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

If you want to hide from the kids and staff for half an hour, where do you go?

When I need a change of pace, I head to the baby room in our Garden Nursery or take a walk with my dogs, Mabel and Fergus. They’re the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.

The song you sing at full volume when everyone’s gone home?

It’s got to be something upbeat! Whether it’s a Liverpool anthem, a Deacon Blue classic, or Olivia Dean’s Dive – you’ll find me singing at full volume when the school day ends.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I’d tell my younger self to make the most of every single minute. Time moves fast, and there’s so much to experience and learn – so embrace it all.

And your current pupils?

My advice to pupils is simple: don’t waste time worrying about things you can’t control. Focus on what you can do and throw everything you have at it.
