View from the Top: Sarah Rollings on greenhouse vs hothouse – which is the best recipe for success?

For this week's View from the Top, we've handed over to Sarah Rollings, the head of Heathfield School. Below, Mrs Rollings explores the goal and the strengths of the 'greenhouse' model of schooling...

The ‘greenhouse’ versus ‘hothouse’ debate continues to inspire heated discussion. Both educational approaches aim to support children’s growth and success but take fundamentally different paths to achieve those goals. Understanding the strengths and challenges of each can help make informed decisions about how best to nurture our young learners in today’s fast-changing world.

While a hothouse model focuses on fast-tracking academic results, the greenhouse approach takes a broader view, valuing intellectual development but also social and emotional wellbeing.

Although traditionally education placed a higher value on core subjects such as maths, science and languages, while these remain essential, the demands of the modern world increasingly highlight the importance of creativity, adaptability and problem-solving.

The goal of the greenhouse is to provide every learner with an ideal mix of support, structure and freedom, to help them excel, explore interests and discover strengths. A broad and balanced curriculum which blends academic excellence with holistic growth ensures students gain both foundational knowledge and those soft skills they need to thrive. The increased emphasis on personal development recognises every young person as unique.

The greenhouse values a diversity of learning experiences, integrating co-curricular activities - such as sports, arts and technology - with academics, offering a well-rounded education that fosters curiosity, resilience and a love of learning.

One key strength of the greenhouse model is giving students agency in their education, encouraging them to make choices, try new activities and even create initiatives of their own. This may be joining a debating society, designing projects using AI and 3D printing or organising a school magazine. Opportunities like these allow them to take ownership of their learning and cultivate independence and self-confidence. Importantly, they also develop a sense of responsibility and the belief that their contributions matter, both within the school and in the wider community.

Setbacks and challenges are an inevitable part of any learning journey. In the greenhouse, these moments are reframed as opportunities for growth. Instead of focusing on mistakes as failures, students are supported to reflect, learn and move forward with greater resilience and determination.

Participation and collaboration are central. Group activities, house competitions and community events encourage teamwork, leadership and inclusivity. Students gain valuable experience working with others, solving problems and of course celebrating shared success.

In education, balance is key. In the greenhouse, young people can thrive as whole individuals, preparing themselves not just for exams but for life’s opportunities and challenges.

By blending academic rigour with creativity, curiosity and resilience, the greenhouse approach equips young people to navigate an unpredictable future with confidence and capability. It offers a framework for developing the skills, attitudes and values needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving world while maintaining the joy and fulfilment that should always accompany the process of learning.

And the best measure of success is the outcomes, if these reflect the diversity of student choice driven by each individual’s passion – whether that be studying law and economics or fine art and fashion, then you know you’ve done an excellent job.
